Tom was born and raised in Heron Lake and graduated from Heron Lake High School in 1975. He attended the University of Minnesota and earned his Bachelor's Degree in Agricultural Education. Tom also attended Minnesota State University at Mankato and received his Bachelor's Degree in Life Science. He is currently in his 36th year of teaching, two years at Marshall Public Schools and the past 34 years at Mountain Lake High School teaching agriculture and science. Tom is active in the Minnesota Association of Agricultural Educators and Mountain Lake-Odin-Ormsby Sportsman's Club. Tom is married to Kelly, who is a Senior Court Clerk for Watonwan County, and they have three children, Nathan, Ben, and Jessica.

Tom serves on the following committees: AMC Voting Delegate, Cottonwood County DAC, Cottonwood County Ditch Authority, Des Moines Valley Health & Human Services, Family Services Collaborative Board, Greater Blue Earth River Basin Alliance, Intergovernmental Relations Board, Land Use Advisory Committee, Planning Commission, Private Industry Council Chief Elected Official Board Members, Rural MN Energy Board, Soil & Water Conservation District, SW Minnesota Regional Solid Waste Commission, Travel SW Minnesota.
